In this interview with Lee Davis, President of Liquid Floors, Inc. we talk about Cove Base and how it adds that extra look and protection to your epoxy flooring.

Interviewer:

Great, and first of all tell me about this, one of the things that I see a lot is called Cove Base.

Lee:

Right, yep.

Interviewer:

It looks like some kind of trim that goes on the bottom of the floor.  What is the point of that Cove Base?

Lee:

You install it with your floor and it goes into more of the decorative floors, it goes into pharmaceutical areas or where you will put down a resurfacer, it will go into maybe clean rooms where you want to be able to wash down the floors to clean up the dirt and grime easily.

So, we make the cove base out of epoxy. You can mix it with epoxy and sand or decorative quartz to make it match the floors.

Interviewer:

So, it’s not like a piece of plastic you are installing like the trim one might install on their home, you are actually making this cove base out of the epoxy itself.

Lee:

Correct. You take your floor and you want to make say a 4-inch cove which is typical or larger but a 4-inch code you put what we call it cove strip at the top so your cove is going to be an 8th inch depth and then you hand trowel your material in there and give a little radius at the bottom so it becomes part of your floor and then you tie your other floor into it.

Interviewer:

Ok, so it is literally connected to the floor in there which gives you complete protection from liquids climbing up the wall or or stuff like that.

Lee:

Yes, you do it in kitchens, food processing plants, pharmaceutical, anywhere where you are going to have water on the floor you want to wash it down and not have a place to trap water and contaminants where bacteria and mold and stuff can grow.

Interviewer:

And how high up does that go usually?

Lee:

Typically about 4 inches.  We have a project going on and they want a 6 inch cove base.

Interviewer:

And you do whatever color they want?

Lee:

Yes, if the floor is gray, you can topcoat the cove base and whatever color you use it’s going to be a good match if it’s it’s a broadcast or decorative quartz you build your cove base you mix your epoxy and colored quartz to make it the same color to make it match.
